A picturesque town in Sikkim is about to introduce bamboo water bottles for tourists with the aim of completely stopping the use of plastic water bottles and litter.
Lachen, arguably the first city to completely ban packaged drinking water bottles, presents bamboo bottles as an alternative.

The plastic bottles left behind by tourists prompted the local community to introduce the ban. The bamboo water bottles were ordered from Assam through Sikkim deputy Rajya Sabha Hishey Lachungpa.
It was in 1998 that Sikkim took its first steps towards banning plastic water bottles. In 2016, he banned the use of conditioned drinking water in government offices and at all government events.
There are random checks for tourist vehicles along the way to ensure that no one brings plastic water bottles to Lachen.
