India’s budget carrier IndiGo said on Saturday that one of its employees had died of a coronavirus infection in Chennai. While the airline didn’t provide details, a source told news agency that the employee was an aircraft maintenance engineer and passed away on Friday.

The engineer was in his mid-50s and has worked with the carrier since 2006. He was stationed in Chennai, as per the reports. “We are very sorry and saddened by the death of one of our loved ones in Chennai due to infection with the corona virus,” the airline spokesman told news on Saturday.

This may be the first aviation death in the country due to coronavirus infection. “This is a heartbreaking moment for all of us at IndiGo. In this period of mourning, we stand together with his family and demand that we respect the privacy of our employees and their families,” said the spokesman.

The number of infections in the country has exceeded 8,000 and over 260 people have died.
